The Signature of John Rumbarger, 1889, on his Will

John Rumbarger (1810-1889) and his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Leathers (1818-1844) were the parents of Anna Mary Rumbarger Marshall (1838-1924) of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania.  She was the mother of 12 children, descendants of whom claim lumberman and businessman John Rumbarger as an ancestor . . .

A 2007 Visit To Warrior's Mark

June 2007 brought me a remarkable visit to Warrior's Mark, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, and the great good luck of locating the home built by Johannes Rumbarger and his wife, Elizabeth Ellenberger, in the first decade of the 1800s.  On this historic property, the family cemetery is located.  The elder Rumbargers lie buried here, as does Elizabeth "Betsy" Leathers Rumbarger (1818-1844), first wife of their son John.

The property long has been owned by the Wertman Family, and Mildred Wertman (see photo below) shared the oral tradition that the smaller building just behind the two-story house, and slightly to the right, was built for the Rumbargers' son and his family.  If the son was John, then this house is most likely the birthplace of Anna Mary Rumbarger Marshall and her siblings.

I carried back to Warrior's Mark that day the John Rumbarger Family Bible (see photo).  From the day his family headed west for Armstrong County, the significant records contained in this Bible have been kept safely in the family of Rumbarger or of his daughter, Anna Mary Marshall.  Who could imagine that the book ever would return to this site?

My research partner that day was Justin Kirk Houser, an avid and gifted local historian and genealogist who also has a family connection to this place through . . . [add] . . .   Justin had visited the family cemetery on this site ten years ago, and his help was invaluable in locating the Wertman Farm.  He is a first-year law student at Penn State.

The photograph of John Rumbarger comes from the family photo collection of his descendant, the late Helen Sprankle Sheffler, kept now by her daughter Sue Sheffler Yokim of DuBois, Pennsylvania.

The early photograph of Eliza Rumbarger Goodyear is from the family photo collection of Kelly Marshall and was given to him by Dorothy Rumbarger Mack in the 1970s.  It came to her from her grandfather, Jacob Leathers Rumbarger, the older brother of Eliza and of Anna Mary Rumbarger Marshall.
