Meridith Marshall deployed to Iraq ~ August 2008
Click on the photo for more about Meridith's family.

WEB_robb_marshall_fam_2008.jpg

Meridith Hodder Marshall was posted recently to Iraq, according to sister-in-law Linda J. Marshall.  Meridith is an attorney who serves in the United States Marine Corps with the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps.  The great majority of her service in Iraq will be in the "Green Zone".  Robb and Meridith make their home in California.  Our prayers for her safe return to Robb and her three children, Jenna, Aiden and Sierra.  See a recent photo of the family above and at this webpage. If Robb's hair looks blue in this picture, his sister assures us that it is--part of an occasional promo for Stone Brewing Company, for which he does information technology (IT) work. [August 2008]

Jay Marshall Safely Home from Afghanistan

January 2008

Staff Sergeant Jay Marshall, son of Frank and Robin Marshall of Kylertown, Pennsylvania, was deployed to Afghanistan last summer [2007].  You may recall the June 2006 article in Family! about Jay’s military service as a handler of trained dogs and his prior posting to Iraq.  An email on 31 January, 2008, from his wife Jen says that he'll be safely home that evening.

Some Parker, Pennsylvania Boys who served in the Spanish American War

Standing:  Fullerton Parker, John WIlkins, Lee Morrow, Chase Robinson
Kneeling: Watson Mobley, Hope B. Cooper, Harry Arters

In this photo, descendants of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall are Chase Robinson (1877-1951) and Hope Baily Cooper (1876-1951).  Members of the extended family, by marriage, are Fullerton Parker and Lee Morrow.  These men served in the Tenth Regiment Infantry, National Guard of Pennsylvania, in the Philippines.

Hope Bailey Cooper (1876-1951)

A dozen letters from Hope to his mother, Sarah Bailey Cooper, and his siblings are in the possession of his grandniece Sue Cooper Van Winkle Neubert of Dormont, Pennsylvania.  I hope to transcribe and post them sometime in 2008.  Here's a sample:

Washington, April 24./98
To His Mother

"I suppose you are wondering why I have not written sooner.  Well, it is because I have been too lazy.  Tonight however, I have brought myself to it and doubtless will tell you some startling news.  I have not joined the national guards yet, but by the time you shall have received this, I hope to be enlisted in.  I hope you have no objections for I feel as though I must go.  I am not doing this hastily for I have considered carefully.  Chase [Robinson] * and John [Wilkins? ] joined it yesterday . . . who can tell whether I shall ever see Parker again . . ."

On the Train, heading for San Francisco, May 21, 1898
To His Mother

"I supposed you were very much surprised to hear that we were bundled off to the Philippines.  It was a surprise for us.  We did not know it until Wednesday noon and we packed up and got out the same night.  Chase [Robinson] telegraphed home.  I told him to tell you . . . We have seen no buffaloes, or Indians or bandits yet.  We are on the praries though and as far as I can see the land is as level as a barn floor . . . In every large town there is a large crowd at the depot to cheer us as we pass through . . . Well I will close for this time, will write when get to San Francisco if the Indians dont catch us."
~
* Chase Robinson and Hope Bailey were half-second cousins, both descendants of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall.
