In this photo, descendants of Catharina Truby
Rohrer Marshall are Chase Robinson (1877-1951) and Hope Baily Cooper (1876-1951). Members of the extended family, by
marriage, are Fullerton Parker and Lee Morrow. These men served in the Tenth Regiment Infantry, National Guard
of Pennsylvania, in the Philippines.

| Hope Bailey Cooper (1876-1951) |
A dozen letters from Hope to his mother, Sarah Bailey Cooper,
and his siblings are in the possession of his grandniece Sue Cooper Van Winkle Neubert of Dormont, Pennsylvania. I hope
to transcribe and post them sometime in 2008. Here's a sample:
Washington, April 24./98
To His Mother
"I suppose you are wondering why I have not written sooner. Well, it is
because I have been too lazy. Tonight however, I have brought myself to it and doubtless will tell you some startling
news. I have not joined the national guards yet, but by the time you shall have received this, I hope to be enlisted
in. I hope you have no objections for I feel as though I must go. I am not doing this hastily for I have considered
carefully. Chase [Robinson] * and John [Wilkins? ] joined it yesterday . . . who can tell whether I shall ever see Parker
again . . ."

On the Train, heading for San Francisco, May
21, 1898
To His Mother
"I supposed you were very much surprised to hear that we were bundled off to
the Philippines. It was a surprise for us. We did not know it until Wednesday noon and we packed up and got out
the same night. Chase [Robinson] telegraphed home. I told him to tell you . . . We have seen no buffaloes, or
Indians or bandits yet. We are on the praries though and as far as I can see the land is as level as a barn floor .
. . In every large town there is a large crowd at the depot to cheer us as we pass through . . . Well I will close for this
time, will write when get to San Francisco if the Indians dont catch us."

* Chase Robinson and Hope Bailey were half-second cousins, both descendants
of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall.
