Late June was a good time for babies in our one huge family!

Monday, 23 June 2008 saw the birth in Virginia of Abigail Sarah Robinson to Michael and Kristen Muller Robinson.  This good news comes from Granddad Sam Robinson of New Hampshire.  The new baby joins older brother Sam, who will turn three in a few weeks. Abigail is a seventh-generation descendant of Frederick Rohrer, Jr. and Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall, through their daughter Betsy Rohrer Robinson of  what is now Hovey Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, her son Samuel Marshall Robinson, his son Charles Prosser Robinson, his son, the late Charles S. L. Robinson, and his son Samuel F. Robinson
~
And the next day, Tuesday, 24 June 2008, Mia Ann Mondok was born in Raleigh, North Carolina.  She is the first child of David and Brenda Campisano Mondok.   The good news comes from her great-grandmother, Eva Bradley Marshall Tataseo of Hermitage, Pennsylvania.  Mia is an eighth-generation descendant of John Marshall and Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall, through their son John Marshall of Parker, Pennsylvania, his son WIlliam K. Marshall of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania, his son Earl J. Marshall, his son Clifford W. Marshall, his son Twyde E. Marshall, his daughter, Connie [Marshall] Tataseo Mondok, and her son, David P. Mondok.

Welcome to this one, huge family, Abigail and Mia!

Ryan, Adrianna and Dayna Shaw

Leap Year Day--29 February--was one lucky day for Dayna and Ryan Shaw.  Their first child, Adrianna Mae Shaw, was born that day in Greensburg, Pennsylvania--our family's ancestral home from the 1770s.  Adrianna weighed six pounds, two ounces and was eighteen and three-fourths inches long.  Among the many well-wishers, she was welcomed by grandmother Sandra Marshall Hixon and great-grandmother, Alice Recupero Marshall, wife of the late Clifford C. Marshall (1932-1998).  Adrianna is an eighth-generation descendant of John and Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall, through their son John Marshall of Parker, Pennsylvania, his son WIlliam K. Marshall of Reynoldsville, his son Earl Jay Marshall, his son Clifford W. Marshall of Kittanning, and his son, Clifford C. Marshall.  And she's a third cousin, once removed, of Nicole Louise Marshall--see below!

Welcome to this one, huge family, Adrianna!

Christmas came early for Greg and Angel Marshall, with the birth of daughter Nicole Louise Marshall on 22 December in London, Kentucky.  She joins older brother Gregory Allen Marshall (born 2003) in their home in Kentucky.  News came from proud grandparents Frank and Robin Marshall of Kylertown, Pennsylvania.  Nicole is a seventh-generation descendant of John and Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall, through their son John Marshall of Parker, Pennsylvania, through his son William K. Marshall of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania, his son Earl Jay Marshall, and his son Twyde Earl Marshall of Niles, Ohio.

Welcome to this one, huge family, Nicole!

Esther Marshall Galpin is hosting a reunion and picnic for her branch of the Marshall Family--descendants of Ed and Carolyn Graffius Marshall of Altoona--at her Pennsylvania home on Saturday, 13 September.  She recalls that "Uncle Earl used to sing to me, Powder your face with sunshine, put on a great big smile -- and promises that a music group coming for part of the day will sing that and other favorites to entertain family members.  Esther writes that all are welcome--so either contact her directly for details or email me and I'll put you in touch with her. [18 August 2008]

NOTE:  Ed (William Edward) Marshall (1878-1956) was a son of John Leathers Marshall and Julia Ann Henderson Miles; John L. Marshall was a son of William Kelker Marshall and Anna Mary Ryumbarger of Reynoldsville, Pensylvania; and William K. Marshall was a son of John Marshall and Charlotte Kelker of Parker, Pennsylvania.  John Marshall was the third child of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall and her husband John Marshall (1761-1806), our emigrant ancestor.

Meridith Hodder Marshall was posted recently to Iraq, according to sister-in-law Linda J. Marshall.  Meridith is an attorney who serves in the United States Marine Corps with the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps.  The great majority of her service in Iraq will be in the "Green Zone".  Robb and Meridith make their home in California.  Our prayers for her safe return to Robb and her three children, Jenna, Aiden and Sierra.  See a recent photo of the family above and at this webage. A photo disk arrived in my mail the other day from New England, courtesy of our cousin Sam Robinson.  A few weeks ago, Sam emailed me to say that he had the Family Bible of Elisha Robinson and Betsy Rohrer, as well as the Prosser Family Bible.  [Charles and Eliza Brinker Prosser were the parents of Emma Prosser Robinson, wife of Samuel Marshall Robinson].  During some recent rainy weather, and while Gloria was visiting the new granddaughter [see above] in Virginia, Sam photographed and scanned the images from both Bibles, as well as some clippings and a photo found in them.  I can't wait to study these most important family documents--primary sources for birth, marriage and death dates of the Elisha and Betsy Robinson Family of what is now Hovey Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

A cursory look at one record page was very moving to me.  Elizabeth--if she was the writer (my guess)--began recording the names and death dates of her family members.  She names her father, Frederick Rohrer, Jr., and then leaves a space so that she can fill in the death date when she looks it up--or asks her brother Frederick A. Rohrer down in Greensburg.  Then she records the month and year for the death of Olive Robinson, her mother-in-law, with a space left for the day.  She never got back to this project.  How I wish she had put the date there for her father's death in 1794!  I don't think there's a record of the month and day anywhere.  Then Betsy Robinson records the date of death for her mother, Catharine [Truby Rohrer] Marshall.  She next writes the name and date of death for her step-father, John Marshall.  Then she begins recording the deaths of her children, beginning with the first boy named after Dr. Hovey.  Dr. Simeon Hovey's death date is recorded--but no one recorded Aunt Hovey's date of death after 1868.  We do have it, however, from the Bible of her "daughter" Mary Ann Marshall Bailey.  I'll post some images of these significant Bible pages a.s.a.p.  Thanks very much to Sam for sharing them.  Click here for more about our Family Bibles.  [05 August 2008]

More graduation news from Lakeland, Florida!  Mark Collins writes to share the news that his son Greg Collins (see photo above) graduated from Lake Gibson High School this spring.  Greg will be attending the University of South Flordia. He's the grandson of Gladys Himes Collins and the late Edward C. Collins. Gladys is a granddaughter of Jay E. Marshall (1892-1961) of DuBois, Pennsylvania.  Congratulations and best wishes to Greg! [26 July 2008]

My sister Karen Marshall Hawk and I spent a quiet morning, today, with my parents on their 65th Wedding Anniversary, at their home in West Kittanning, Pennsylvania. Percy Marshall and Bety Shankle were married on 25 July, 1943, in the First Brethren Church of West Kittanning.  They reminded me that shortly after their wedding day, both the church building and the photographer's studio burned to the ground!  For that reason, they have only one small wedding photo, coming out of the church.  It was taken by one of my mother's friends.  I'll post it, when Mom scouts about the house and finds it for me.  Dad spent yesterday in Pittsburgh's Allegheny General Hospital having some heart-related tests.  We're all thankful he was able to be home today.  We'll celebrate this happy occasion with them at each of their family reunions this summer: at the Marshall Reunion on 09 August and at the Shankle Reunion on Labor Day. Thanks to all who have sent them greetings or who shall.  Email me for their address! And click here for an anniversary photo tribute.  [25 July 2008]

Graduation news from proud grandma, Dr. Sandra Marshall Clark of Tucson concerning two grandsons who graduated from high school this spring:  "News on Nathan Towse:  He graduated from Mifflinburg High School with Honors, Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, on June 4, 2008 and will go to Arizona State in Phoenix to pursue a degree in Entrepreneurship.   News on William Clark.  He graduated May 30, 2008 from The International School of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and will attend George Mason University in Virginia to study international politics and business."  Nathan is the son of Lynn Clark and Jim Towse.  William is the son of Mark and Setyowati Clark; Mark works for the State Department in the Far East, where WIlliam grew up.

Leanna Marshall of Lawrenceville, Georgia, also graduated this spring.  She'll be atending nearby Gainesville COllege, where older brother Josh Marshall is also a student. Leanna is daughter of Ted and Georgine Marshall.  Click here for photos of these high school grads (toward the bottom) -- but also take a gander at all these children and youth of our family: all members of this one huge family, all siblings or distant cousins of each other, and all of them, our hope for a better time and a better world.  Don't they make you proud? [18 July 2008]

A pre-Fourth of July visit with cousins Sue and Dale Neubert of Dormont, Pennsylvania (a suburb south of Pittsburgh) brought to light some additional treasures from the Bailey and Cooper lines of the family.  When I was recovering from my recent surgery, Sue had emailed me about finding a box of photos which she and I had not explored on prior visits.  Among them were early photographs of Mary Ann Marshall Bailey (1804-1895) and her husband, Elisha H. Bailey.  My best guess is that these pictures are very early examples of photography, dating perhaps to the 1840s.  You can see them by clicking here.  In addition, we looked over a packet of letters from Spanish-American War soldier Hope Bailey Cooper, grandson of the Baileys.  They were written to his mother and siblings and will prove a good read once they're transcribed for the larger family.  Thanks to Kimberly Marshall Santamaria of Tampa and Jennifer Marshall of Columbia, South Carolina, for offering to work on that project.  Read a sample and see Hope's photo here.

A deep, sincere thanks to Sue--and by extension, to her late mother, Sarah Cooper Avey--for preserving these grand treasures for us all.  Mrs. Avey's family history book, My Pennsylvania Ancestors (1987) has been quite helpful in tracking our family in and around Parker, Pennsylvania.

On a sadder note, I learned from Sue of the death of Ed Chmiel, husband of her cousin Ann Cooper McKee Chmiel, on 07 June at their home in Barefoot Bay, Florida.   [05 July 2008]

An email message this evening from cousin Dick John relays the sad news of the death on Sunday, 15 June, of Richard (Dick) Beatty of Tipton, Indiana, after a long struggle with cancer.  Dick is married to Cathy Marshall Beatty, the daughter of Eddie and Ada Catherine Dunn Marshall of Altoona.  Our prayers and sincere sympathies to our Beatty kin in this sad time.  Click here for more[17 June 2008]

Sad news from our Mohney cousins in CaliforniaLarry Larson (see below), husband of Barbara Mohney Larson, died Sunday afternoon, June 1st.  His brother-in-law Paul Mohney writes of this great sadness: "This is the price we pay for loving one another. Even if you have the certainty of an afterlife or the continuity of the ebb and flow of life, losing your best friend is still a heartbreak.  Even if you are expecting death to be your constant companion, being left behind to have that hole in your heart is the hardest part of it all."

I'll post Larry's obituary when I receive it, as well as a photo of him and Barb from their visit to Pennsylvania last summer, at the webpage entitled In Memoriam[02 June 2008]

From our cousin, Judith Ingram Tebbs in Portland, Oregon, about the family website:  "Just spent some time viewing the Marshall website.  It is just incredible!!  I still can't believe after more than a year that I am a part of such a large and interesting family and that I now have roots back so many generations.  With family faces, and Bibles, and geography locations, and grave markers, and paper clippings, and reunions and visits to prove it!"  Thanks, Judy!  [01 June 2008]
