In the days when our ancestors had only a very few books in their homes, one invariably was a Bible.   In this book, often, the family recorded births, marriages and deaths.  For this reason, locating a family Bible is an event of great significance to those who research the family's story.

But our stories always are much more than the records of when we were born, when we married, when we died.  The presence of a family Bible tells more of the story.  It tells something about the faith of our ancestors and about the importance they placed on having this book and its stories in their homes.  Most likely, these large Bibles were not carried with them to church.  They remained in the home where, at the least, they served as the "official" records of significant family events.  At the most, the Bible provided a frame of reference for their lives.  And if anything was passed to succeeding generations, more often than not it was their Bible and its essential family records.

Do you have a family Bible, the records of which you're willing to share with the larger Family? If so, please contact me at marshallfamily@zoominternet.net.

Please note in the above document this typographical error: I recorded the death of John Marshall (born 1803) as 1879.  He died in 1889, as you can see clearly in the copy of the hand-written record.

Note also that the basic, intiial information recorded here is all in one hand and with the same ink color.  This indicates that one person sat down, when the Bible was new, and wrote the data from memory or copied it from another source.  My best guess is that this in the handwirting of John Marshall himself.
