Sarah
Isabella (Sarah Belle) Bailey Cooper (1847-1910) was the sixth child and fourth daughter of
Mary Ann Marshall (1804-1895) and Elisha Hope Bailey (1805-1883). She was born in Prospect, Butler County, Pennsylvania, on 22 April
1847. On 2 October, 1867, she married John Thomas Cooper, an Irish-born oil producer
who was making his fortune in the area which soon would be named Parker Parker City, Pennsylvania. Cooper,
an elder in the Presbyterian Church, traveled extensively on business (including a trip to Denver). He died of tuberculosis
at the young age of 46. Sarah Belle was left with the oversight of his several business ventures and the care of their
eight children, who ranged in age from 15 (Albert) to an unborn child who would arrive in December 1883 (Katherine) .

A hearty, deep-felt thanks to Sue Neubert, a great-granddaughter
of Sarah Bailey Cooper, for generously sharing the many family treasures she has kept from the Bailey
and Cooper Families of Parker, Pennsylvania. Sue's mother, Sarah Cooper Avey, was an avid family historian--click on her name for more about her genealogical gifts to
our extended family. Sue, who is a writer, has contributed several family pieces to our occasional newsletter
and to this website. See a photo of Sue and Dale with theri grandchildren at the shore in 2006--go all the way to the bottom of the page! And click here for a photo of their entire family on the same family vacation, also near the bottom of
the page. See below, right, for a photo of Sue and Dale with their grandchildren.

| The Cooper Mansion, Parker City, Pennsylvania |
A photograph of the home of J. Thomas and Sarah Belle Bailey Cooper, in oil-rich Parker City,
Pennsylvania. This house was one of the finest in the oil regions. Notice the family scene: some
members are on the porch; two boys are riding bicycles; and to the right, others are playing croquet.
After Thomas Cooper's death, the family "downsized" and moved elsewhere in Parker. This
building became the Parker High School, with several generations of local young people going about their learning tasks in
it. The school was destoyed by fire in 1959. Our cousin Sam Turk of Emlenton, who grew up in Parker and graduated
from this high school, recalls the structure well.
