 Meeting Family Members . . .

finding 'lost' cousins, making a connection, getting to know each other and becoming friends . . . what a great way to overcome some of the impersonal aspects of 21st century life, and to find again the kinship bonds which kept our ancestors close.

I think they're proud of us, for finding each other.

Visiting Anne Elliott Stempel and her husband Guido Stempel in Athens, Ohio
February 2008

Anne is the daughter of Violet Heffner Elliott, the granddaughter of Kate Marshall Heffner, and the great-granddaughter of William K. Marshall and Anna Mary Rumbarger of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania.

Anne carefully has kept many family photos which came to her through her mother and her Aunt Laura Heffner--and she kindly shared many with me, including the classic professional 1921 photo (below) of ancestor Anna Mary Rumbarger Marshall (1838-1924).  As well, Anne has promised to spend some time with me on the phone, telling me her many memories of the Marshalls and the Heffners.

Cousins Fred Marshall and Iseli Koenig Krauss, May 2008, near Clarion, Pennsylvania

An Early May Visit in Clarion, Pennsylvania

Fred Marshall of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, visited his alma mater--Clarion State University of Pennsylvania--in early May for Alumni Weekend.  Fred was honored with a special gift in this 70th anniversary of his graduation, at a reception in the President's home. He arrived by train in Greensburg, and his nephew Jackson Marshall hosted his visit to Western Pennsylvania.  He is seen here with his "first cousin once-removed", Dr. Iseli Koenig Krauss, of Clarion.  Iseli is a retired professor of psychology at Clarion.  In this photo, they are in the backyard of Iseli's Clarion home.

Iseli's mother, Helen Marshall Clayson Koenig (1904-1971) and Fred were full cousins.  Fred, Iseli and Jack all are descendants of William Frederick Marshall and Narcissus "Perk" London; and W. F. Marshall was a son of William Kelker Marshall and Anna Mary Rumbarger of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania.

Gladys Himes Collins and third cousin Kelly Marshall, Lakeland, Florida, February 2008

Visiting Cousins in Florida
February 2008

A late February escape from Ohio's winter made possible a first in-person visit with cousins Gladys Himes Collins of Lakewood and Kimberly Marshall Santamaria of Tampa.

Gladys is the daughter of June Marshall (1914-2000) and Harry Himes (1910-1970); and her Marshall family line runs back through Jay E. Marshall to John L. Marshall to William K. Marshall of Reynoldsville; W. K. Marshall was the son of John Marshall (1803-1889) and the grandson of John and Catharina Marshall.  She and her late husband Ed (1939-2006) are the parents of Gregory E. Collins and Susan Collins Wools, and the grandparents of five.

Kimberly is the daughter of Hal Marshall and Barbara Hall; and her Marshall family line runs back through Robert A. Marshall to William E. (Ed) Marshall to John L. Marshall to William K. Marshall of Reynoldsville; and W. K. Marshall was the son of John Marshall (1803-1889) and the grandson of John and Catharina Marshall,  Kimberly and her husband John are the parents of Katie and Christopher.

Gladys Collins and daughter Susan Collins Wools, February 2008

Gladys and I enjoyed looking over lots of photgraphs from her family line, and I appreciated learning some of the stories of the Jay E. Marshall Family of DuBois.  This family made their home on Patterson Avenue right beside the Rumbarger Cemetery, where Jay's great-grandfather, John Rumbarger, is buried.  He was the father of Anna Mary Rumbarger Marshall of Reynoldsville.  Glady's Uncle John F. Marshall still lives right there!

Kimberly is an active genealogist in her own right.  Whereas I've focused almost exclusively on the history and stories of descendants of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall, Kimberly is tracking multiple family lines simultaneously.  She also kindly has transcribed many documents for me, making it possible for me to post them online and/or prepare them for printing.  We had a great time looking through scanned copies of photos from her father.  And she's promised an article for the next occasional newsletter about her daughter Katie's developing skills as a pianist!

Jack and Kelly, doing what Jack loves most
~
Jackson Marshall paid a visit to third cousin Kelly Marshall in March, and the two had a long weekend to share family stories and get to know each other better.  Jack is one of the few descendants of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall to live in our ancestral home of Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  In fact, Jack's place of business is only a few doors away from Zions Lutheran Church on Pennsylvania Avenue, where our ancestors Christopher and Sybilla Bauman Truby are buried.  Kelly and Jack share a common great-great grandfather, William Kelker Marshall of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania.

Mike Anderton (right) and Kelly Marshall, May 2008

Mike Anderton and Kelly Marshall connected in person on a rainy day in mid-May at Franklin, Pennsylvania, to get to know each other, swap family stories and look at photos and genealogical research each has been doing.  Mike has focused primarily on his Anderton ancestors, while Kelly has studied the Marshall and Robinson descendants of Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall.  Kelly and Mike are half-fifth cousins--"half" because their common ancestor is Catharina Truby; Mike descends from her daughter, Betsy Rohrer Robinson (1791-1881), and Kelly from Betsy's half-brother John Marshall (1803-1889).  These half-siblings were neighbors in Lawrenceburg (now Parker) Pennsylvania most of their long lives.

Click here for a link to our family's website page which honors Mike's brother Sam--Samuel Lee Anderton (1948-1968), who died in battle in Viet Nam.  Mike is locating for us a few good photos of his brother, to add to this site. Sam was named for his great-grandfather, Samuel Truby Robinson (1864-1845), who had been named for his maternal grandfather, Samuel Truby (1808-1896) of Brookville, Pennsylvania.

Samuel Truby and Betsy Rohrer Robinson (see above) were full cousins; and their children, second cousins Caroline Truby and Elisha Robinson, married.  Sam and Mike, therefore, are descendants of Col. Christopher Truby (1736-1802) of Greensburg twice--through his son Michael Truby, father of Samuel Truby; and through his daughter Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall, mother of Betsy Rohrer Robinson.

Got that?

An October Visit to Georgia

During my week with my daughter Jennifer in Columbia, South Carolina, I made a quick overnight visit to Ted and Georgine Marshall in Lawrenceville, Georgia.  Ted and I are third cousins, both of us descending from William K. Marshall (1829-1911) of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania: Ted through his son John Leathers Marshall, and I through John's younger brother, Earl Jay Marshall.  We had a great time looking at family photos, visiting with their college-aged kids Leanna and Josh, and sharing some family stories.  See photos, below--click on each to enlarge it.

Eva Bradley Marshall Tataseo and nephew, Kelly Marshall, August 2008

 ~
My Aunt Eva Bradley Marshall Tataseo and I enjoyed an afternoon's visit in early August at The Ridgewood, her new home near Hermitage, Pennsylvania.  She shared stories about how she met my great-uncle Twyde Marshall, her first husband, at the home of his Uncle Twyde and Aunt Twila Marshall in Niles, Ohio, in the early 1940s; and also about her trip to Italy with her second husband, Tony Tataseo, and their chance finding of his second cousin (and look-alike) in the town from which his parents came.  We looked at lots of family photos.  Aunt Eva shared her excitement about the recent birth of a seventh great-grandchild, Mia Ann Mondok, in North Carolina and the impending birth in a few weeks of an eighth, to granddaughter Susan Mondok Imposimato.

Richard Schunk (center) and son Andrew, with Kelly Marshall August 2008
~
An August, weekday work trip to Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland brought me the opportunity for lunch on the way with Andy Schunk, editor of the Twinsburg Bulletin.  His dad, Dick Schunk, joined us for some good conversation about this and that.  We met at a neat sandwch shop on the main street in the college town of Kent, Ohio.  Dick and I are third cousins.  His great grandfather, John Leathers Marshall, and mine, Earl Jay Marshall, were brothers--sons of William K. Marshall and Anna Mary Rumbarger of Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania.  For some of what Andy has written, poke around at the newspaper's website, www.twinsburgbulletin.com.

Cousins Find Each Other at the Portland Zoo

At the Oregon Zoo!
~
"I know you!"
With these words, distant cousins recognized each other, as they each had their families at the Portland (Oregon) Zoo in September.  They had met in August 2007, when descendants of the Henry Frank Marshall family gathered for the first in a very long time picnic at the home of Deanna and Brett Heller.  Someone said, "Let's get a picture for Kelly!"--
and here it is.  Thanks very much, guys!

October in Charlottesville

On my way to spend a week with my daughter Jennifer in Columbia, South Carolina, I spent some time in Charlottesville.  Here Simeon Hovey Marshall and his family migrated from Venango County, Pennsylvania, in the 1870s.  His younger daughters all married Virginia men, and a number of their descendants still live in or near Charlottesville.  The photos below show me at lunch with Dr. Charles Gleason and his wife, Elizabeth Behrendt Gleason after worshiping with them at St. Paul's Memorial Episcopal Church.  A quick visit with Alice Stevens Marshall was enough to meet and to lay the groundwork for learning more about her branch of the family, that of Marshall Perry Fletcher. Alice's husband David, by the way, is not a descendant of our Marshall family.  Alice's grandfather, Marshall P. Fletcher, was a grandson of Simeon H. Marshall.
