Latest Update:

"Peace to the soul of the young printer-soldier."
These words mark the end of the death notice of 32 year
old Andrew Eaton Marshall in the Pittsburgh newspaper at which he worked. Andrew was the only
child of the ill-fated couple Andrew Marshall (1800-1832) and his wife Barbara McQuiston.
Andrew E. Marshall (1828-1860) was born in Wheeling, [West] Virginia,
only a few miles from St. Clairsville, Ohio, where his father was reared by the Marshall family after the death of John and Catharina Truby Marshall
in 1806. After the death of his own parents, Andrew was reared in Butler, Butler County, PA,
by his mother's family, the McQuistons. His paternal
grandparents were John Marshall (1761-1806) and Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall (1764-1806).
His maternal grandparents were John McQuiston (1767-1841) and Barbara Arter/Arthur (abt. 1768-1837).
Andrew married
Sarah Ellen Dougherty (sometimes Daugherty) of Clearfield
Township, Butler County. She was the daughter of Patrick Dougherty and Eunice Gallagher. We
may assume that this marriage into an Irish Roman Catholic family was a matter of consternation to his Presbyterian family--the
McQuistons in Butler and the Marshalls in Lawrenceburg (now Parker). The baptism records of his children show that he
was non-catholic; however, he was buried in the churchyard of the family's parish church in Pittsburgh.
Andrew
died in August 1860, a few months after the Congress granted him a pension for his service in the Mexican War. The day
after his death, Mary Ada Marshall, youngest child of the family, was born. Sarah Ellen died in March 1861, seven months later. Their five orphaned children were reared in
Butler County
by their maternal Grandmother, Eunice Dougherty (1804-1879), and their Uncle Patrick
Dougherty. Their names were Barbara, Amelia, Sarah
Ann, Andrew, and Mary Ada Marshall.
Andrew was a veteran of the Mexican War, having served with Pittsburgh’s
Duquesne Greys. He was by trade newspaperman and printer. He was one of the owners of Butler’s “Democratic Herald”
and was employed at the time of his death by the Pittsburgh
“Morning Post”. He is buried with Sarah Ellen in St. Mary’s
Cemetery, Penn Avenue and 45th Street, Pittsburgh. Some of their children
also may be buried with them.

THE DOUGHERTYS
(Sometimes, Daugherty)

Andrew Marshall Dougherty
The sadness which dogged
the family of Andrew Marshall (1800-1832) and his wife Barbara McQuiston (1809-1837) extended even to a child
named after their son, Andrew Eaton Marshall (1828-1860). Andrew’s
brother-in-law, Patrick Dougherty of Clearfield Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, named his second son Andrew
Marshall Dougherty. Patrick Dougherty was the brother of Sarah Ellen Dougherty Marshall
(about 1829-1861). He was a farmer in 1860 and owned real estate valued at $2500. His wife’s name was Catharine Duff, and other children
in the family in 1860 were Hugh Francis Dougherty (aged 3) and John R. Dougherty (aged
5 months).
Andrew Marshall
Dougherty was born in about 1858—he’s two years old when the 1860 Census was taken. His Uncle Andrew E. Marshall died in Pittsburgh
in the summer of 1860; and his Aunt Sarah Ellen Dougherty Marshall died the next spring. Their orphaned children landed in Clearfield
Township with Eunice Gallagher Dougherty, mother
of Sarah Ellen Marshall and her brother Patrick Dougherty. We don’t know
when little Andrew Dougherty died--or whether a childhood illness or an accident took his life. But he is absent from the family listing in the 1870 census record.
Is he buried near his grandmother Eunice in the historic cemetery of St. John’s
Roman Catholic Church in Coyleville, Clearfield Township?
