The

Rohrer late of Westmoreland County Deceased
Humbly Sheweth
That
your Petitioner is a minor under the age of twenty one years
and
above fourteen and has no Guardian to take care of her
person
& Estate.
She therefore prays that Doctr. Simeon Hovey of the
County of Armstrong
may be appointed her Guardian until
She
arrives at the age of twenty one years—
And she will ever pray
[signature] Elizabeth Rohrer

Armstrong County, Pennsylvania)
NOTE: Elizabeth “Betsy”
Rohrer was 19 years old when Hovey was appointed her guardian. Four
years later she married Elisha Robinson, Hovey’s nephew. Guardians
were appointed in 1795 in Westmoreland County,
upon the death of her father. I’ve not located a record of an earlier guardian appointment than this 1812
document. Her mother died in 1806, and the Hoveys apparently had made a home for her from that time.

DEATH NOTICE FOR
ELIZABETH “BETSY” ROHRER ROBINSON, 1881
Elizabeth Rohrer Robinson was the
matriarch of the Robinson Family of Hovey Township,
Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Born 5 August 1792 in Greensburg,
Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Frederick Rohrer, Junior (1767-1794), and
Catharina Truby Rohrer Marshall (1764-1806). After her mother’s death,
she was reared by Dr. Simeon Hovey and his wife (her mother’s sister), Mary Ann "Polly" Truby Hovey. Dr. Hovey became her legal guardian in 1812.
In 1816, she married Hovey’s nephew, Elisha Robinson (1791-1874) of Connecticut. They inherited the Hovey lands upon his death in 1837.
She, her husband, some of her children, her half-brother Samuel Marshall (1801-1835) and the Hoveys are buried together in the Hovey-Robinson Plot of
the Parker Presbyterian Cemetery.
From The Weekly Phoenix
Parkers Landing, Pennsylvania
Friday, 23 September 1881
DIED. ROBINSON—Mrs. Elizabeth (Rohrer) Robinson died at her residence in Hovey township on Wednesday night,
between the hours of 10 and 11 o'clock, in the 89th year of her age—a shock of corn fully ripe for the Master’s
use. [We hope to be enabled to give a more extended notice shortly.]
Note: The next issue
of The Weekly Phoenix is missing in the
collection of the Pennsylvania State
Archives. Neither can I locate a copy of a Kittanning or Butler newspaper which includes this Robinson obituary.

I met Professor Robinson in the late 1970s. His distant cousin, Charlotte Turk Dean of Parker, paved the way for this meeting with a phone call, making the family connection for him. This friendship involved periodic correspondence and in-person conversations, which continued through the
summer of 2001, when my cousin Jimmy Marshall and I visited him at his home for the last time.
His interest in our family was keen; as well, he cared
about my career and encouraged me in it. He shared with me many, many family
traditions and clues to some of the family treasures in the Samuel Marshall Robinson home—“the brick house.” He was fond of recounting the kidnapping of Aunt Hovey (Mary Ann “Polly” Truby Hovey) by the Seneca Indians
in the 1770s. He also was proud of his family’s links to the Robinson United
Methodist Chapel, across the road from his home, and to the Episcopal Memorial Church of Our Father in Foxburg. He always was eager to talk about family, church and books. My life and my knowledge of our family was enriched through knowing him.
He lies buried near his Robinson kin in the churchyard of the Episcopal Church in Foxburg.
I encouraged Mr. Robinson to write down the oral traditions which he had received, as a member of this family. He did so--and you can share his memories by clicking on the link below.
